So many methods have been proposed, developed and promoted in the surgical treatment of fractures.
Since Swiss A.O. Group pointed out that compression was a great advantageous factor in the fracture healing, many others reported A. 0. compression had advantages of (1) anatomical reduction and reduction of gap between fragments (2) rigid internal fixation (3) shortening the duration of fracture healing (4) .rapid mobilization of the joints in proximity and prevention of the joint stiffness.
Thirty seven cases of fracture were treated with compression plating according to A. 0. method at the Department of Orthopedic Surgery, College of Medicine, Seoul National University from June 1969 to March 194 and the results were obtained as follows;
1. Age range was 17 to 77 years old.
The most common group was fresh femur fracture in third decade of male.
2. Postoperative external immobilization was applied in 33 cases among 37 cases and the other 4 cases were not immobilized with good results. ~
3. Average duration for immobilization was 4.3 weeks in humerus fracture, 4.0 weeks in forearm bones, 5.9 weeks in femur and 4.7 weeks in tibia.
4. Average duration for bony union was 7.5 weeks in humerus fracture, & 0 weeks in forearm bones, 13.8 weeks in femur and 12.7 weeks in tibia.
5. tConiplications of one infection and one nonunion were treated with secondary surgery successfully.
6. A.O. compression fixation is considered as a good method for the fracture of long bones.
